S’appuyant sur la richesse de son héritage ancestral, Stanley Wany explore la transformation et l’entrecroisement des cultures africaines à travers une pratique multidisciplinaire qui conjugue le dessin, la peinture, l’installation et les romans graphiques expérimentaux. Il s’intéresse aux notions de migration et de transmission culturelle, ainsi qu’au concept de créolisation, marqué notamment par la dispersion et le métissage des peuples, des idées ou encore des cultures, et influencé par le phénomène de propagation rhizomique. Dans ses œuvres, il revisite fréquemment les archives coloniales et historiques afin de sonder ses propres racines et de mettre en lumière l’expérience contemporaine des personnes afrodescendantes.

Rhizomes

Abordant l’idée de transmission culturelle, les tableaux Rhizome et Rootstocks se penchent sur les manières dont la culture africaine se propage depuis plus de 600 ans, de l’Afrique aux Antilles, et au monde entier. Stanley Wany allie textures terreuses, couleurs de café et carte géographique du continent africain dans la mise en forme d’une réflexion sur le concept de rhizome, développé par les philosophes Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari, puis repris par le penseur Édouard Glissant. Envisagé comme une configuration non hiérarchique en constante évolution, le modèle rhizomique implique que chaque élément peut en influencer un autre, et ce, de façon réciproque. En envisageant la transmission de la culture africaine à travers le prisme du rhizome, l’artiste souligne comment celle-ci a survécu à la traite atlantique, s’est transformée et a prospéré à travers l’histoire. Les œuvres exposent la multiplicité des liens qui unissent les communautés noires des Amériques, comme autant de nodules vivants assurant la croissance et la présence d’espaces d’apparition pour la diaspora africaine.

Drawing on the richness of his ancestral heritage, Stanley Wany explores the transformation and intertwining of African cultures through a multidisciplinary practice combining drawing, painting, installation and experimental graphic novels. He is interested in migration and cultural transmission, as well as the concept of creolization, characterized by the dispersion and mixing of peoples, ideas and cultures, and influenced by rhizomatic propagation. In his work, he often revisits colonial and historical archives to investigate his own roots and to illuminate the contemporary experiences of Afro-descendant communities.

Rhizomes

Exploring the idea of cultural transmission, Rhizome and Rootstocks examine how African culture has spread over the past 600 years, from Africa to the Antilles and across the globe. Stanley Wany combines earthy textures, coffee-coloured hues and maps of the African continent to develop a reflection on the concept of the rhizome, introduced by philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari and later taken up by the thinker Édouard Glissant. Viewed as a non-hierarchical, constantly evolving configuration, the rhizomatic model implies that each element can influence another, reciprocally. By considering the transmission of African culture through the lens of the rhizome, the artist highlights how it survived the Atlantic slave trade, transformed and flourished over time. The works reveal the multiplicity of connections that link Black communities across the Americas, like living nodes supporting the growth and presence of spaces of emergence for the African diaspora.
